Goal Setting Basics

goal setting

We all hear a lot about setting goals for ourselves, so that we may meet and/or exceed them and keep moving forward to great achievements in our lives. Setting a goal for yourself is very much like driving to a location you’ve never been before. You set the destination on your GPS and through its “magic”, the GPS tells you how to get there. Wouldn’t it be great if life worked the same way?  You set a goal and you get there automagically. Well…, unfortunately or fortunately, it doesn’t happen that way. We actually have to work at it. We have to have clarity about our destination or goal and then develop a plan.

Remember the age old question “how do you eat and elephant”? One bite at a time. Achieving your goals is like eating an elephant. You get there one action after another, each action enabling you to achieve milestones and each milestone a stepping stone to your goal. So how do you develop the plan?

First, you have to be clear about your goal. What do you want to achieve? Be specific. Be crystal clear. Make it grandiose. Make it so big it scares the heck out of you. The clearer you are, the more likely you are to reach it. Once you know your goal, decide when you want to accomplish it by. 3 months? 6? 1 year?

Now that you have your vision, ask yourself what it is you will need to achieve it

• What am I willing to do to make my dream come true?

• Am I who I need to be to succeed? If not, what skills do I need to work on?

• What am I willing to give up?

• Who do I need to surround myself with? Do I have the right mentors?

• What resources do I need? How resourceful am I willing to be?

Now go dream! Dream BIG! Figure out what you want. Put the plan in place. Then, it’s all about ACTION! We can dream all we want, but if we put no effort or action behind it, that is all it will ever be; a dream…
